Najat Vallaud Belkacem was born on October 4, 1977, in Morocco. In 1982, she moved to France. Become french in 1995, she’s now 39 years. Legal practitioner by training, she worked for several years in a lawyers firm at the Council of State and at the Court of Cassation, the French Supreme Courts, (human rights, pharmaceutical law, electoral law). She was involved in the local political life, as Regional Councillor for Rhône-Alpes, in charge of cultural affairs; deputy mayor of Lyon, in charge of local democracy and of the organisation of major events, community life and youth. She also was General Councillor for Social affairs (Rhône).
She joined then the national political life as Ségolène Royal’s spokesperson during her campain for the presidential election in 2007 ; then as François Hollande’s spokesperson in 2012 (elected president that year). Member of the National Board of the Socialist Party, in charge of society issues, she has also been the Vice president of the French European Movement, a transnational think tank that promotes European integration. In 2012, she was appointed Minister of Women’s affairs and spokeswoman for the government. She pursued her political carreer as Minister of Urban planning, Youth and Sports and finally became Minister of National Education, Higher education and Research from 2014 to 2017.
